Enquirer Sues Judge to Unseal Case – Above the Law

Cincinnati Enquirer:
The Enquirer is asking the Ohio Supreme Court to force Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Nadine Allen to open documents she ordered sealed in a criminal case, alleging she is improperly preventing the public from viewing case documents.
Jack Greiner, attorney for The Enquirer, filed the request Tuesday. Allen wouldn’t comment Tuesday.
Ohio law allows judges to seal documents but only after reviewing each individual document, holding a hearing and specifying the injury leaving the documents unsealed would do and to whom. Allen, the suit alleges, didn’t do that before she ordered the case hidden from public view.
“The order seals every word of every case document. It is hard to imagine how a court could be more oblivious to” Ohio laws regarding sealing of documents, Greiner wrote.
